Sir Maurice Wilkes is a Fellow of St John's College and came to Cambridge in 1931. After working in radar research during the Second World War, he became the second head of the Mathematical Laboratory. This was the forerunner of the Computer Laboratory. In 1949 he successfully built the first stored program computer.

 

He was the first president of the British Computer Society and was knighted in 2000.
