Simone Hochgreb researches aspects of combustion in gas turbines (jet engines).

The rig in the photograph allows research into the more efficient burning of fuels and a greater understanding of the resulting pollutants. This is a relatively new area of research in jet propulsion as historically most research has focused on turbine design. The combustion in gas turbines has not changed much since their invention. However, environmental pressures and fuel prices are driving the demand for a greater understanding of combustion.
