Julian Dowdeswell is Professor of Physical Geography and a Fellow of Jesus College. He uses satellite, airborne and shipborne geophysical tools to study the form and flow of glaciers and their response to climate change. Professor Dowdeswell is photographed in the Institute at the door of a freezer, which is capable of dropping to -40°C and is used to conduct small-scale research.
The Scott Polar Research Institute was established in 1920 with funds raised in a national appeal to commemorate the men who died during Captain Robert Falcon Scott's expedition to the South Pole in 1912. The SPRI conducts research in both Antarctica and the Arctic and across a broad range of academic disciplines.
