Jean Michel Massing is a Professor in the Department of the History of Art. His research interests are broad, extending from classical art and its influence from Antiquity to the Renaissance to African art from the 16th to the 19th century.

The Department was established in the 1970s on the division of the Faculty of Architecture and Fine Arts. Fine Arts has a long history with Felix Slade who established a Chair in 1869. The Department boasts many notable alumni including sculptor Antony Gormley. There are currently about 70 undergraduates and 40 postgraduates.
