Athene Donald is Deputy Head of Physics and a Fellow of Robinson College. She is part of the Biological and Soft Systems Research Group, which takes a multidisciplinary approach to the theory and experimental aspects of the interface of physics and biology. This is currently regarded as one of the most important areas in physics.
The Cavendish Laboratory was the first specially designed physics laboratory in the world and was officially opened in 1874. The Laboratory was originally on the New Museums Site but moved to West Cambridge in 1974.
There are currently about 220 teaching and research staff in the Department with 120 support staff. There are over 300 registered PhD students with about 120 undergraduates.
