Paul Knights has been the boatman for Queens' College for 24 years and is the Chairman of the Boar's Head Boat Club (for alumni of Queens' College). He started rowing in 1973 for Cambridge 99 Rowing Club and following an apprenticeship as a carpenter became a boatman. He won a bronze medal in the world ergo championships in 1999 in Boston, USA and has been a top competitor at Henley Royal Regatta more than a dozen times and has won the Henley Veterans several times.

The boathouse was built in 1987 with racking for up to 19 eights, a workshop and gym facilities for members of QCBC. About 100 people are involved in the College club which has records that go back to 1831.
