Phillip Gallego is the only full-time glass blower in the University and works in the Department of Chemistry. He first worked for Cambridge in 1978 in the Department of Engineering. He joined Chemistry in 2001.

The first chair in Chemistry at Cambridge was established in 1702 and is the oldest chemistry chair in the United Kingdom. The Department moved to its current location in 1958. There are now 70 academic and about 110 support staff with 250 postgraduates and about 750 undergraduates in the Department.
