Dan Cross is responsible for the production of liquefied helium and nitrogen for use throughout the Cavendish Laboratory. Physics makes extensive use of liquid helium as a cooling agent for experiments across a broad spectrum of research. Helium liquefies at 4.2 Kelvin (-269°C) and can reach temperatures of 1.3 Kelvin in experiments. Nitrogen is positively temperate in comparison liquefying at -195.8°C. In contrast, the coldest weather ever recorded on Earth was -89.2°C in Vostok, Antarctica.
