The Cambridge University Women's Association Football Club was formed in 1989 although the first varsity match took place in 1986. The club puts out two sides, while there are 27 colleges with women's teams.
Cambridge has had a long history of football. Henry de Winton and Charles Thring, while at Trinity College, are credited with drawing up the Cambridge Rules for football in 1848. Although substantially changed, it is widely accepted that these formed the basis of the rules of Association football.
