Marian Holness is a Fellow of Trinity College whose area of research at the Department of Earth Sciences is petrology, the study of how rocks form and particularly the solidification of molten rocks. This is important in the understanding of the creation of many mineral deposits. Dr Holness is also a Cambridge City Councillor.

 

The current Department of Earth Sciences was established in 1980, however it can trace its roots back to the 18th century. There are currently 37 academic staff, 21 support staff and 44 post-doctoral members of the department.
