Frank King is a Fellow of Churchill College, a Senior Lecturer in the Computer Laboratory, a Deputy Proctor and the University Bellringer. This last position is an ancient post and the holder's duties include looking after the University Clock in the tower of Great Saint Mary's Church.

Certain University statutes specify times for the start of University ceremonies and the time is taken from the University Clock. Since 1793 the clock has chimed the Cambridge Quarters. In 1858, these were copied for the chimes of Big Ben and the hour bell of the clock in the Houses of Parliament.
